The film was released on 22 June 2001 worldwide, while the dubbed Tamil version was released in Tamil Nadu in August 2001.[3][4] Upon release, the film received positive reviews.[3][4] The Kannada version was screened in the International Film Festival of India.[7][8]

Jalapathy Gudelli gave the film 3.25 stars out of 5, concluding his review that "Mirchi showcases Prabhas in different avatar. Neat package of masala moments and Prabhas are the strengths. Mirchi is a decent entertainer and time pass flick".[36] Jeevi gave a rating of 3.25 out of 5, commenting that "First half of Mirchi is decent. Flashback episode which occupies 100% of second half is good. Climax could have been better. The plus points of the film are Prabhas, music and all-round orientation. On a whole, Mirchi has all the ingredients of a commercial potboiler".[37] Mahesh S Koneru gave his verdict that "At the Box Office, the film will turn in a good commercial performance", giving the film a score of 3.25/5.[38] Way2movies also gave a rating of 3.25/5, giving the verdict that "Prabhas rocks the show in this decent yet formulaic commercial entertainer".[39] Super good movies gave the film 3 stars in a scale of 5, reviewing that "Go and Watch Mirchi, It entertains both Class and Mass. It is a worth watch".[40]

How is Koratala Shiva direction?Koratala Siva is one of the established writers in Tollywood. He had picked up a script which had shades of several movies like Athidhi, Bhadra, Dammu etc. He had penned some very powerful dialogues which excite fans. But as a director, he failed to come out convincingly. The movie goes on with out any excitement and becomes more predictable towards the climax.

The remastering job begins by finding the original negative of the movie and scanning it. If the negative is not in a good shape, then it could affect the quality of the film. Meanwhile, the colouring works would be done simultaneously. It is only after this stage that the various problems in negative would be rectified. The sound is worked only in the last phase. If the movie is meant for theatrical release, the sound would be changed to Dolby atmos quality. Meanwhile, the visuals would be changed to 4 K quality. Interestingly, OTT platforms are the main markets of the remastered versions. The greatest advantage of remastered movies is that the production houses need not spend hefty sums to make movies exclusively for the OTT platforms. The remastered version of a super hit movie could be released digitally for just Rs 2 -3 lakh. Some companies might upload the latest versions on YouTube too. However, losing the negative had been a major setback for many such Malayalam movies.

Mirch Masala as a movie has some powerful impressions of a dry arid land, the heat of the mirch masala factory and a lone woman standing upto her convictions. The last scene, as a group of women attack their perpetrator with handfuls of mirchi powder is unforgettable. This social movie, set in the 1940s was actually shot in the Kathiawar Peninsula.
